What are your favourite writing resources?

I love the internet. Where in the world would we be without Google or forums or online critique groups? There is so many amazing resources out there and most of them, I don’t even know about.

So let’s share some of our favourites! Hopefully I have some for you guys, and you have some for me and we can all find something new to help us with our writing.

Here are some writing resources that I love:

1. How to plot a novel in 5 steps – I’ve read a lot of articles about plotting, but this one is by far the best. I’m not a huge “plotter” but I love this post and refer back to it all the time.

2. Twitter – I spend a lot of time on Twitter. When you follow a lot of other aspiring authors, agents, publishers etc, it gives you a really good overview of what’s going on in the writing world. I follow a bunch but in particular, I like:
@KMWeiland & @RaeAChang & ‏@Michelle4Laughs – people to follow who always link to twitter pitch fests and other writerly things that are going on.
@LitRejections – amazing twitter feed that links to agents.
@AdviceToWriters – for great inspiring quotes.
Tags to follow: #amwriting, #PitchMadness, #10queries, #10queriesIn10tweets

3. Publishers Marketplace – for those who are looking for an agent.

4. Critique Circle – an online critique group that I like.

5. And on the reading side of things, I keep track of all my books on GoodReads and buy them at Fishpond.

What are some of your favourite online writing resources?

Jodie, thank you for these helpful hints. I’ve found Sol Stein a really helpful writer. The first book I read was ‘Stein on Writing’, and have forgotten the title of the 2nd. I don’t usually enjoy such books but his kept my interest and included things you’d know, like ‘show don’t tell’, but also useful tips about type font.

Love Critique Circle. Love Goodreads. I don’t plot much, but I’ll have to read into it.

My favorite writing resources involve a graph of argument fallacies (gosh I’ve gone to that page more often than anywhere else, I think), Critique Circle (although I haven’t posted anything there for nearly a year. I know. I know. I need to), and my local Publishing Association website. Other than that, WordPress. Heh. Obviously.

Once in a while, Wikipedia or Dictionary.com. I also seek out MLA guidelines once in a blue moon.

ALSO! I just bought Scrivener online. Does that count?

  5. Thanks for this – some interesting things here. I liked How to Plot a Novel in 5 Steps, especially the boredom test! And the Critique Circle looks well worth a try.

I enjoy reading other blog posts, surfing the internet and just reading books or magazines to get the feel of how it’s done. The Writer’s Market is a good resource for publishing etc.. Often, I get my muse from things that have happened in my life. I have an idea for a novel or two based on past experiences and events. Mostly, they are mental notes that hopefully, will see ink to paper very soon.

I maintain a list of resources found by community members over at Legendfire: Writing Forums: http://www.legendfire.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8098

It’s gotten ridiculously long, but there’s a lot there. (I also have a lot of books I use for resources. Ursula Le Guin’s Steering the Craft. 3 A.M. Epiphany, various science books, grammar books, and so forth.)
