I found this quiz on Brin’s blog, and while I’m not technically a “book blogger”, I like the questions so I’m answering them 🙂
What are your top three book pet hates?
1. I really, really, really hate it in romance novels when the girl doesn’t want to do something (for example, go somewhere, kiss the guy, go on a date etc) and the guy insists that she does want to do it (and hey, maybe she does and is playing hard to get) but no means no. It bugs me to no end that the guy can’t take no for an answer and will insist until she gives in. HUGE PET HATE! She said no! Respect her decision! Argh! Rant over.
2. When you read a book and it’s awesome, but then you have to wait a year for the second book to come out, then another year for the third! I generally wait until the whole trilogy is out to start reading a series now. I’m way too impatient.
3. Female characters who are indecisive. I really dislike characters who just can’t get their crap together. Like, seriously, make a decision! It isn’t hard.
Describe your perfect reading spot
My bed 🙂 I like to read where it is quiet, away from distractions. My bed is the perfect place.
Tell us three book confessions
1. I actually kind of liked the Twilight trilogy until the fourth book came out.
2. I am a huge Harry Potter fan. Back in 2005, I read SO MUCH fanfiction. It feels like a lifetime ago now, but I still look back on that time with really fond memories. Lyn and I were living together at the time and it was like one big fanfiction fest! Dramione all the way!
3. I like my books light and simple. The idea of sitting down with War and Peace or some other “classic” is like torture to me.
When was the last time you cried during a book?
I don’t think I’ve ever cried in a book. I giggle and flop around on my bed when something is adorable. Like this:
How many books are on your bedside table?
*checks* Currently… five. I’ve bought them all this month and they’re waiting to be put away. I’m thinking of doing a book haul post at the end of the month so they’re in limbo. I’ve read one and read one before.
What is your favourite snack to eat while you’re reading?
No real preference. You can never go wrong with chocolate and Red Bull.

What is your biggest reading secret?
I read a lot of books and it is really rare that I like one enough to get excited about. My Goodreads account is littered with 2 or 3 star ratings. Books rarely grab me but when they do… so exciting!

I’m so with you on #1 on your top 3 pet peeves. It’s a sign that we live in a misogynistic world, and that needs to change forreal! I think I’ll consider filling out this test as well, but in a few days.

I totes agree with you on #1, except that I think it really worked for Rocky 1. It’s the only movie I like in the Rocky series. Adrian was so self conscious but smart, and Rocky was just a big stupid oaf with heart. Adrian just wasn’t sure about this guy, which I think is a normal reaction upon meeting a potential lover for the first time.

Completely with you on waiting for a series to be completed before you start reading. I thought I’d done thus with Isabelle Carmody, but she has taken around 30 years and the series is still not completed. A lot of fans are peeved.

There are some series where it would be overwhelming to me to start reading after ALL the books are out. Wheel of Time is one example (I mean, Robert Jordan died before the series was ever finished!). I think it is fifteen books ( I lost count) that are all at least a thousand pages each book. No, I can safely say I’m not picking up the next book right after the last one is finished. I’d need to take a vacation.

Let’s put it this way. Keeping track of the characters after the first book becomes more and more difficult. Once a series had so many characters, each book had very little forward momentum since the reader had to spend at least half the book getting caught up with each character and what they are doing.

Your 3 pet peeves are interesting and probably reflect those types of books that you read. The fantasy ideal that a man will pursue his love interest. Beating all obstacles until the true love is obtained.
Such books reinforce a lot of negative stereotypes.
For me, these days, I prefer a good biogprahy or autobiography.

Your number one pet hate was actually one of the major inspirations for my own writing. I hate, hate stories that don’t include meaningful consent and a respect for boundaries. I decided that I wanted to play with all the paranormal overtones that are used to excuse that kind of behaviour and still make it inexcusable in the story. Plus, try to show how yummy enthusiastic consent actually is.
So I am so glad that you also hate that kind of behaviour. I won’t even get started on the “forever series” pet peeve because I suspect that the comment character limit is not nearly long enough 😉

In place of peeve two: I detest it when authors make me listen to the bad guy thinking. I do not LIKE the bad guy. Because, you know, he’s the bad guy. Don’t make me spend time in his brain. I will close your book and go sell it to someone I don’t like. For fifty cents. And post a review on Amazon.

I really agree with number 1. I want to add to that….when the male acts like a jerk, or lies, or doubts the female, but once he says “I love you” she forgets all about it. That is why I am not a fan of romance novels

I liked this one so much I took the test myself. My favorite answer was one of the confessions: the first story I ever wrote, I threw each page away as I wrote it, because I was too embarrassed for anyone to read it.

Great post, and great responses to the quiz questions! I may have to do this quiz on my blog now…right after I tidy up my bookshelves so I can photograph a favourite that won’t fill me with shame. That gives me a possible idea for one of my book confessions – the uninspired appearance of my beloved bookshelf!

I remember crying when I read Bridge to Terabithia. It was 1am and I was bawling my eyes out. I couldn’t stop reading until I had finished the book. Some schools study this book in Year 6, but I was an adult when I read the book!

A sweet post, thanks! Especially the #1 pet hate, and your giggling while reading. I think I might STEAL those (moo hahahahaha!) for my superheroine. I like the idea of a super-strong, fearless woman giggling and flopping on her bed, and having to be careful that she does not break the bed frame.
P.S. Red Bull? I prefer coffee.
