Jodie talks Reading Habits

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
It’s my dream to have a room dedicated especially to reading. A room where I can keep all my books with a reading nook. But for the time being, I usually just sprawl out on my bed. Otherwise, if the weather is nice I’ll sit outside on my porch on my daybed. But I’m usually just reading in bed, at work in my lunch break, or in my car before I go in to work.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?
I don’t have any real preference. I have plenty of bookmarks that I use on occasion, or I dog-ear the pages. I’m also a spine-breaker, so I generally just leave the book face down and open on a flat surface, haha.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?
I can stop, but I prefer to finish the chapter if I have the time.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?
No, not really. Maybe I’ll have a can of Red Bull or something, but I generally eat at the table, or snack in front of the TV.

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?
No way. Only if I have no other option. I much prefer silence so I can lose myself in the pages.

6. One book at a time or several at once?
One book at a time. I don’t have any idea how people have multiple books on the go! Maybe non-fiction books could be okay, but fiction I like to dedicate my time to.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?
Everywhere! I’m not home very often because I work full-time and spend plenty of time with my partner, so I read whenever I get a spare moment.

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
Silently. Always.

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?
If I’m not enjoying a novel I’ll start skimming. I’ll just flick through the pages to get a general idea of what is happening. These novels are always 1-star reads for me because they can’t keep my attention.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
I break the spines, dog-ear the pages… readers are generally horrified when I say this! But I like my novels to look well loved.

11. Do you write in your books?
No really. It is actually something I think would look really awesome, but I have no idea what I’d write!

Feel free to answer all or some of these questions in the comments!

I read in my living room in a recliner that belonged to my late husband Bill. Since I read digital books in either recorded or text format that can be read aloud to me by my device, I don’t need paper bookmarks. My device usually remembers where I left off when I turn it on. I usually drink water, Dr. Pepper, milk, or cocoa while I read. I prefer one book at a time, but Bill read more than one western or detective novel. I don’t know how he kept track of them.

    1) I like to be comfy when I read so it’s either on the couch or on my bed.
    2) I also do whatever I need to for bookmarking:p
    3) I can stop when I need to, but I prefer to stop at the end of a chapter, too.
    4) I’ll probably just have a glass of water or a cup of hot tea, but I don’t eat while I read.
    5) I also prefer silence when I am reading.
    6) I am actually the kind of person that reads many books at once lol
    7) I can read everywhere, too! Especially with Kindle on my phone:)
    8) Silently is the way for me, too:)
    9) I don’t ever read ahead. If a book doesn’t interest me I still want to finish it, but it just takes me a lot longer to do so.
    10) I have books that no longer have the covers on them lol So I am a spine breaker:p
    11) I don’t write in them unless I am planning on sharing the book with a friend to be able to share thoughts together later;)
It was fun getting to know more about you and sharing our bookish experiences:) Have a lovely day!

Horrified you dog ear your pages! Gee when I borrow books I feel I should be wearing velvet gloves so I don’t mark them. Lol.

#1: No particular place—living room, kitchen—somewhere to sit or stand as I read.
#2: I’ll dog-ear, but sometimes I’ll just straight-up memorize the page no.; I want to keep the book intact and more or less undamaged/unaltered, which answers #10 and #11.
#3. If it’s good I’ll want to finish a couple more chapters. And if it’s addictive like Gone Girl, I may end up reading the rest of the book! (And I did!)
#4: I’ll drink water sometimes… especially on account of the addictive part of #3.
#5: Music is a major distraction for me, and the TV would have to be at low volume. I can multitask when it comes to writing, but not for reading; my attention needs to be undivided.
    #6: One at a time.
#7: I can read in a car (a good choice if waiting), but more often I read at home.
#8: I’ll often read aloud for better comprehension, plus simulation of tone (bring it to life).
#9: I may conduct a slight overview to see if it’s any good, but I’ll always start from the beginning, and never skip pushing through. If it’s bad, I just won’t or can’t read it. (Sorry, author.)
