Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I absolutely love the layout of your blog. What widget did you use to create the side profile and the tracker for your book?

A: The image and opening text is the “Gravatar” widget. The tracker comes from Critique Circle and is called a word meter. It can be found here and added to your sidebar using a “Text” widget.

Q: I have seen you reading/reviewing a fair number of Two stars it seems lately …… I actually feel bad that you go through and read so many bad books…

A. I find book reviewing really interesting, because I can read something and be like “meh” and other people will read it and be like OMG THIS WAS THE BEST BOOK EVER! So it really depends on personal taste.

I generally have a 50 page rule. I’ll read 50 pages and if I’m not fussed then I’ll put it down, but when review copies of books are sent to be from publishers then I will take the time to read the entire novel.

I enjoy reading average books, but it really makes me sit down and think about what it is that makes them so average. And then of course, when I stumble across an amazing book it makes it that much more exciting!

Hey Jodie. I’m not a publisher but I do do reviews. Also a 26 yr old Australian author (dystopian but not YA.) Are you letting people read and review your book, or keeping it under wraps until you find a publisher?

Hi Jodie. Just dropping in to say thank you for liking my initial post. I just browsed your blog and I think it’s great!
As to my writing schedule, I shoot for 2 hours a day with no word count limit. Presently I am proofreading/editing my next novel and that is a challenge in itself.
I look forward to reading your future posts and maybe chatting sometime.
    Have a great day!

  8. Hi Jodie – my name is Chris and I’m following your blog on WordPress. I’ve noticed that you write a lot, often in sci-fi, and I was wondering if you could help me out. I’ve been writing my high school senior thesis and I need some people to peer edit for me. I’ve asked some other WordPress followers already and I haven’t received much help. Would you mind taking a few minutes to read it over and make some edits for me? Even if you can only edit a small portion, that would be really helpful. The thesis is on my WordPress site TechnologChris, under “My Tech” and under “Senior Thesis”. Thank you very much!

Liking your blog very much. I understand your interest in chapter length. I find that the action and setting drive the length. In one novel I am editing (my own work) I have chapter of 1000 words and another of almost 5000 words. For me it depends on what is happening and how involved it is. This novel has 28 chapters and is about 62,000 words. I am also four chapters into to a western and the word count on that is around 28000. Good luck with your writing. I do edit and digitally
publish authors, so if you need publishing help drop me a line on my blog. Cheers!

  28. Jodie, I have a writing question i hope you can answer for me. I am kind of new to publishing and I have self published the same book three times because of formatting errors, and my own as well. I’ve been going to a writers group who have given me a lot of good ideas and structure to my writing. However, when they critiqued my new book, they said that I need to get away from passive tense. My question is, should I go back and change my first book so there isn’t passive tense in it, or should I leave it as it is? The one I am writing now is the sequel to the first book, and its in the sci-fi gender.

Hi, thanks for your questions. I’m probably not the best person to ask though considering I’ve never self-published.

If it was a standalone novel I’d probably say to leave it and start new with something else, but if you’re committed to writing a sequel, then the first book needs to leave an awesome impression otherwise most readers wouldn’t even bother with the second 🙂

      Hope this helps!
