What To Read Now — March 2015

Okay I admit it… I give a lot of bad reviews. I pick up a book and nine times out of ten it is going to have a star-rating of two or three. I’m not sure if that is just because I’m picky reader, or because I’ve read WAY too many books over the years and I know what a good book is like…

Either way, as readers of this blog, you guys would see a lot of two and three star reviews from me, which isn’t exactly helpful if you are searching for a new read. So, each month I’ve decided to put together some book recommendations for you all. These are books that I have read and adored over the years.

In March 2015 I’m recommending:

Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers | Young Adult, Contemporary
Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard—falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High… until vicious rumors about her and her best friend’s boyfriend start going around. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn’t come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend… if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don’t break them both first.

My Review:
I read this book back in 2011 and didn’t write any feedback. I remember loving this one though. The issue of bullying is so current and I loved the way the author dealt with the subject.

 

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls | Adult, Memoir
The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.
The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

My Review:
It isn’t very often I rate books at 5 stars. Hardly ever. But I LOVED this book. I devoured it in one sitting. I adored everything about it. Will definitely purchase for my bookshelf and recommend for others.

 

Backstage Pass by Olivia Cunning | Adult, Romance, Erotica

My Review:
God, I love this book. In all reality it’s 85% sex, but damn, Myrna and Brian are so amazing together. As characters they practically fly off the page and Olivia Cunning’s writing flows so well. I rated this 4 stars last time and am now bumping it up to 5. I can’t wait to devour the rest of the series!

 

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater | Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.
At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

My Review:
I loved a lot of things about this book, but do you know what I loved the most? I loved that Sean wasn’t described as hot. That he wasn’t “swoon worthy” and spectacular and rippling with muscles and attractiveness. And all I can say about that is THANK GOD! Finally a male character in YA that stands on his own without his superficial looks to carry him!
Loved everything about this book. Best story I’ve read in ages. Very original, great writing, excellent characters, great romance development. I believed every word.
